Neighbor Outdoor product and storefront
Case study · Neighbor Outdoor

An outdoor brand outgrowing its first stack needed storefront engineering that could keep up with the catalog.

Neighbor Outdoor had momentum in product and wholesale interest, but the original storefront was bending under catalog complexity, variant logic, and integrations that were never designed to scale together. They needed engineering leadership and implementation that treated the store as infrastructure, not a marketing skin.

Fewer developer hours per merchandising release after template refactor

  • 22%

Improvement in filtered collection load time on mobile (lab + field median)

  • 3

Redundant storefront apps retired without losing required functionality

The challenge

SKU and variant sprawl made navigation and filtering feel brittle. Merchandising changes often required developer time, which slowed seasonal updates and partner-specific assortments.

Third-party apps solved point problems but created overlap: redundant data, conflicting scripts, and checkout behavior that was hard to debug when something broke in production.

What we built

We audited the theme and app stack, then consolidated where possible: fewer scripts, clearer extension points, and documented dependencies for the internal team.

Collection and PDP templates were refactored for variant clarity and filter performance, with metafields for specs outdoor buyers actually compare.

We established a lightweight release cadence: staging checks, regression paths for checkout and inventory sync, and guardrails so merchandising could ship updates without Friday-night surprises.

Our store finally behaves like a system. We can run seasons and tests without wondering which app will break checkout this time.
